Saudi Arabia Deploys First US-Made THAAD Missile Defense Battery
Saudi Arabia has officially announced the successful deployment of its first Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system battery, marking a major milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance its aerial defense capabilities.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Defense, the THAAD unit has been commissioned into service following successful testing, evaluation, and field training of personnel. The system was integrated after completing field exercises within the Kingdom, demonstrating operational readiness.
The deployed battery is part of a $15 billion defense deal between Saudi Arabia and the United States. The full agreement includes seven THAAD batteries, 44 launchers, and 360 interceptor missiles—all designed to intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles at high altitudes.
The THAAD system is known for its state-of-the-art radar technology and mobile launch platforms, offering advanced protection against missile threats. It forms a key part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to fortify its airspace and secure critical strategic infrastructure and national interests.
Prior to the deployment, Saudi Air Defense Forces personnel underwent specialized training at Fort Bliss, Texas, where they were instructed on the operation and maintenance of the THAAD system.
Military experts believe this deployment significantly boosts Saudi Arabia’s defensive posture amid increasing regional tensions and evolving missile threats in the Middle East.
