David Corenswet Suits Up as the New Superman in James Gunn’s DCU Reboot
LONDON (Reuters) – The iconic red cape has found a new owner. David Corenswet, a rising star in Hollywood, officially stepped into the legendary role of Superman during the red carpet fan event for the upcoming Superman film, held in London on Wednesday.
Taking on the dual role of Clark Kent and Superman, Corenswet follows in the footsteps of cinematic legends Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill. For the 30-year-old actor—best known for his performances in The Politician, Hollywood, Twisters, and Pearl—wearing the cape for the first time was a moment of transformation.
“When the cape gets on, it really ties the whole thing together,” Corenswet said. “You walk out with it flowing behind you, and you feel like, ‘Yeah, I’m all right. I’ll do okay.’”
The film marks the first major step in director James Gunn’s reimagining of the DC Universe (DCU) for Warner Bros. Known for his success with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn now brings his creative vision to one of DC’s most iconic characters, serving as both writer and director for the reboot.
“My Superman is about kindness,” Gunn explained. “In a world filled with meanness and pettiness, Superman can be seen as old-fashioned—too kind or too earnest. But that’s exactly what makes him powerful today. It’s a movie about hope, told in a universe with giant monsters, flying dogs, robots, and epic space battles.”
Joining Corenswet is Emmy-winning actress Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, The Great, About a Boy) as the infamous Lex Luthor. Hoult shared that he drew inspiration from the comic series All-Star Superman for his portrayal.
“Lex prides himself on being the peak alpha human,” said Hoult. “I really wanted to bring that kind of energy to the character.”
Brosnahan acknowledged the legacy of actresses before her who played Lois Lane, stating that Gunn’s modern vision helped reframe the beloved character for a new generation.
“I think James’s knowledge and love for these characters, and the adventures he’s crafted for them, naturally bring the story into the present day,” she said.
The highly anticipated Superman will begin its global theatrical rollout on July 9, marking a bold new chapter for the DCU.
