A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan, 20 people dead
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border leaving twenty people dead and many more injured.
The quake struck at 11:47pm on Sunday and was centred 27km northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, the US Geological Survey said. It was just 8km deep. Shallower quakes tend to cause more damage.
6.2 magnitude earthquake hits New Zealand’s Auckland Islands
Information on the scale of damage was not immediately available, but Ajmal Darwaish, spokesperson for the eastern province of Nangahar’s health department, said as well as the nine dead, 25 people were injured.

A 4.5 magnitude quake occurred 20 minutes later in the same province.
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan on 7 October 2023, followed by strong aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated that at least 4,000 people perished.
